Government Relations

Many people do not realize there are ongoing efforts in Washington, D.C., on behalf of the fraternity and sorority community. In fact, for more than 10 years, fraternities and sororities have established relationships and communicated our issues and concerns with Members of Congress.

The work is done through the Fraternal Government Relations Coalition (FGRC), of which Pi Beta Phi is a member. The coalition, representing the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC), monitors and addresses legislative issues important to the fraternity world.

Key issues identified by FGRC include:

  • Preserving the full value of charitable deductions in the tax code
  • Addressing college affordability
  • Passing the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA)
  • Defending a student's right to freedom of association and freedom of speech on campus
  • Protecting student due process rights
  • Developing federal anti-hazing legislation
  • Improving communications between our members and federal policymakers
  • Monitoring issues affecting student and campus safety
  • Defending the rights of fraternities and sororities to remain single sex organizations

Do You Want to Lobby on Capitol Hill?

Each spring, a team of Pi Phi collegians and alumnae lobby on Capitol Hill alongside more than 200 Greek men and women - both students and alumni. The annual lobbying day is coordinated by FGRC with assistance from the pro bono work of Arnold & Porter law firm. The men and women not only lobby in favor of legislation important to fraternities and sororities, but also share updates about their personal experiences and news from their respective campuses.

Pi Beta Phi recruits collegians annually to join the Fraternity's lobbying team. Applications are accepted in the fall and are reviewed by Pi Beta Phi, with final selection made by the FGRC. Pi Beta Phi covers travel expenses to Washington, D.C., for all selected members. We are looking for Pi Phis who have extensive campus leadership experience and an interest in government and politics. Pi Phis with existing relationships with Members of Congress would be advantageous to the group.

Applications for the 2018 lobbying team are now closed. For more information about future lobbying efforts, please contact govtrelations@pibetaphi.org with questions.

Support Greek-Friendly Representatives and Candidates

The Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC) is a bipartisan organization seeking to provide financial aid to the campaigns of congressional candidates supportive of issues important to Greek organizations. Through the FSPAC, we are ensuring Greeks have a prominent voice at the table when legislation impacts the fraternity world.

Today, the FSPAC is the largest PAC focused solely on higher education issues. It has made contributions to more than 100 candidates, many of whom secured seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Pi Beta Phi's National Panhellenic Conference Delegate Ana Mancebo Miller currently serves on the FSPAC Board of Directors. To support these ongoing efforts in D.C. on behalf of the Greek community, donations may be made to the FSPAC at www.fspac.org.
