Meet Dr. Laura Valleni, California Lambda

Pi Beta Phi recognizes Dr. Laura Valleni with the 2023 Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award for her efforts in literacy advocacy for children and newborns.

As a neonatologist and the founding Director of the "Babies with Books" program in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Laura has introduced the transformative power of reading to newborns and premature infants, creating a nurturing environment for both parents and medical staff alike. Her commitment to literacy extends beyond the NICU, as she also promotes Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, ensuring that children in her community have access to books from an early age.

lv.pngIn what ways do you believe your experiences as a Pi Phi have uniquely prepared you for your community service?
Pi Phi provided a circle of friends and mentors who not only supported one another but helped foster individuality, creativity, leadership skills and resiliency. We worked on individual and collective goals and projects which cultivated personal growth and community connections. As we have grown older, the friendships fostered in our early years remain a source of comfort, soulful reflection and acceptance as these women know our flaws, strengths, joys and sorrows.

What advice would you give to other Pi Phis who aspire to make a positive impact in their communities?
Have the courage to show up, be curious, be present and respect and value each person. To build trust you must come to the table committed and ready to listen so you may begin to understand what is truly needed and what barriers, fears and circumstances are present.

Who (or what) motivates and inspires you to continue your efforts in community service?
I absolutely love caring for newborns and their families. For me, this is soul-nourishing, an honor to be in this space, my life’s calling and where I feel I can be impactful. It is a joy and a challenge to care for our tiniest human beings and help improve their lives. There is nothing more fulfilling than being able to send a baby home to grow up with their family.

“Pi Beta Phi has taught me…”
The power of community allows us to come together and not demand change but rather create change and positively impact humanity.
