Starting a new chapter

Extension has been an important part of Pi Beta Phi since 1868, one year after our founding, when Libbie Brook Gaddis established our second chapter. If you’re wondering how to bring a Pi Phi chapter to your campus, there are a few things to know about the process. 

All National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) groups have agreed that when a College Panhellenic (CPH) exists on a campus, the CPH must vote in favor of extension before contact is made with NPC member groups. When a campus doesn’t have a CPH, NPC works with the appropriate members of the university administration. 

Pi Phi welcomes the opportunity for new chapters and carefully reviews all inquiries once there is a vote for extension. During our evaluation process, we consider factors like an institution’s academic success, alumnae support in the area and community stability. Ultimately, the decision rests with each university to choose the organization that best fits their sorority community. 

NPC has an Extension Committee that can assist you with the process of starting a new chapter, creating a new Panhellenic system, or affiliating with Pi Phi or any other NPC member group. The NPC website offers more information on bringing NPC groups onto a campus.
