5 Ways to Participate in Fraternity Day of Service

Pi Beta Phi’s Fraternity Day of Service (FDS) is an opportunity to come together to honor our values and inspire a lifelong love of reading. On March 8, the Fraternity is thrilled to host our FDS Signature Event in Louisville, Kentucky—where sisters and friends will distribute 10,000 new books to local schools, after-school programs and community organizations!

Want to celebrate with your community? There are many ways to celebrate Fraternity Day of Service with sisters. Explore these tips below to discover how you can make a lasting impact through the power of reading.

1. Host a Book Drive

Having books at home is one of the strongest pathways to academic success, yet many children grow up without access to books in their households. Organizing your own Fraternity Day of Service book drive is a great way to make an impact. Select a local literacy or community organization to support and be sure to ask what type of books they need most and for which age groups. There are several ways to make book drives donations a fun and successful event. Choose a theme—such as fables, sports, science or your favorite childhood book—and invite members, students or those in the community to contribute books that fit the theme. Remember, all book donations should be new or gently used to ensure the best experience for young readers.

2. Volunteer

Philanthropic Service to Others is a Pi Beta Phi core value and FDS offers a great opportunity to go out into our communities and give back. Connect with your local library or community center to see if they accept volunteers for reading activities with patrons. Whether you’re organizing book distribution stations, reading aloud to children or coloring characters from your favorite stories, volunteering is a meaningful and engaging way to inspire the community!

3. Donate to The Literacy Fund at Pi Beta Phi Foundation

The Literacy Fund plays a critical role in the success of Pi Beta Phi’s literacy initiatives. Gifts to The Literacy Fund help power programs such as Champions are Readers, Fraternity Day of Service Signature Events and Pi Beta Phi Literacy Grants as well as advocacy programming and literacy partnerships. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Pi Phi can continue to make an impact through these premier literacy programs.

4. Celebrate with your Champions are Readers® participants

If your chapter or club participates in Champions are Readers (CAR), include the class you mentor in your Fraternity Day of Service celebration! Collaborate with the teacher to determine activities that will be most beneficial to the students. You can invite guest readers, host a themed reading day, or if your group is planning a celebration away from the school consider having the families and educators of the CAR students join the celebration!

5. Spread the Word about Literacy

Leveraging social media is a powerful way to highlight the importance of literacy and share the impact of your efforts! Create posts that feature compelling statistics and success stories from your community. Gather data from local sources such as your school and State Boards of Education or reference national organizations like First Book. Sharing these insights help raise awareness and inspire others to join in promoting literacy.
