Lobbying for our Future

Two Pi Phis from across the United States recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress on behalf of the Fraternal Government Relations Coalition. Throughout their visit, each member had the opportunity to share their sorority experience and advocate for legislation impacting the fraternity/sorority life community, such as affordable housing, students’ rights and more. Read their reflections below:

When I learned about the opportunity to lobby on Capitol Hill, I knew I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and apply. Pi Phi has had a tremendously positive impact on my college experience, and this was a unique opportunity to represent our sisterhood and contribute to creating a positive environment for others as well.

Lobbying not only expanded my understanding of the extensive planning and research required to effectively advocate for something, but it also highlighted the unique role that citizens play in our government. Anyone can prepare, plan and bring important issues to the attention of government officials, and this experience enhanced my confidence in representing these issues that affect so many people.

To any sister interested in government relations—take advantage of this opportunity! Continue to speak up about the issues we believe in to ensure a better future for our organization.

If you're interested in government relations, my first and most important piece of advice is to find a cause or issue you're genuinely passionate about. As a member of a values-driven sisterhood, I wanted to share our principles, represent our shared interests and advocate for policies that could improve the sorority and fraternity experience. This opportunity not only sharpened my professional skills—it also helped me build a new level of self-assurance and affirmed I can lead effectively.

This experience also helped me realize how receptive lawmakers and their staff were when approached with genuine intention and passion. It was empowering to see that meaningful conversations can happen when you come prepared and speak from the heart. I hope Pi Phis continue to engage in this opportunity so we can build a strong presence in advocacy and make a difference in the lives of sorority and fraternity members across the country.

Lobbying is an invaluable opportunity to build relationships with members of Congress and advocate for our sisterhood all while strengthening your own Personal and Intellectual Growth.
